With the recent explosive increase of cars, a modification of intersectionsof roads such as equipping them with extra short lanes only used by right-turning(for left-way traffic) cars has been prevailing in many cities and towns, for thepurpose of saving total queuing time of cars that want to pass tlu'ough intersec-tions. Here, total waiting time of cars on one road is formulated for the caseswith and without such a "right-turn branch" at an intersection. Reliability of theformulation is tested in comparison with direct observations made at one in-tersection in Morioka City. The ratio of total waiting times for both cases isgiven in a simple, practically useful form, if cars make sufficiently long queuesin one and the opposite direction. It measures, in what traffic condition, how mucheconomization of waiting time can be expected by the modification.
