Nonlinear self-modulation of waves jcropagating along the interface betweentwo homogeneous liquid layers is investigated by means of the derivative expan-sion method. The stability characteristics of a uniform wavetrain are examined onthe basis of the nonlinear Schr6dinger equation. It is shown that the existence ofthe upper layer suppresses the modulational instability. Some limiting cases arediscussed in connection with the Korteweg-de Vries equation and the Benjamin-Ono equation.
