Effects of perturbations on the soliton solutions of the K-dV equation areinvestinated.' A svstem of ectuations which soverns the slow modulation of thesoliton solution is derived systematically from the non-secular cottditions of tltemultiple time scale expatasion. An equation which governs the time e'volution ofthe non-soliton part is also obtained from the first order of the expansion. Tlteresults are applied to one soliton and two soliton problems. In additiorm, contribu-tions of the non-soliton part to the modified conservation laws are i.nvestigatedbriefly.
