We have found that the amplitudes of tlae optical FID, two-pulse photon echoesand stimulated photon echoes in ruby nteasured as a function of appli<cd magneticfield exhibit sharp increases at the umagnetic fields where two Zeeman splittings inthe ground state 'A. or in the excited state E("E) are harmonically 'related. Thephenornena are confirmed to be inherent in tlve Stark (or frequencz,') switchingexperitnent where the sample is subjected to the cw irradiation, and the origin ofthe sharp increases be the change of the steady state population in 'A. of tlaenonresonant Cr tons caused by a combined action of the cw optical pumpingand the spin-spin cross relaxation. The mechanism involved is successfullyexplained by the analysis based on the rate equations.
