Magnetic Properties of a New Magnetic Phase in Fine bcc Chromium Particle Prepared by Gas Evaporation Method

Magnetizatioua of single crystal Cr particles ranging from 380 to 750 A iut theaverage diameter was measured without exposure to the air iua the magttetic fieldup to 1 7 k0e and iut the temperature range from 77 to 870 K. The particles with anA-1 5 type structure (J-Cr) showed temperature-iutdepeztdemat paramagnetism. Thejcarticles with a bcc structure showed a tvew magtaetic trautsitio?a with an orderiuagtemperature about 800 K. Ant anomaly was fouuad at 310 K, which coiuacides withthe N<Set temperature of the bulk SDW tramasitiott, in the temperature-dependenceof the magttetization of the particles. The new magnetic pluase below 800 K isinterpreted as the magnetic order localized near the surface. The features iua theexperimental results are discussed on the basis of the localized-order model.
