A Study of Lithium Clusters by Means of a Mass Analyzer

Lithiuuat clusters containing up to 15 atoms were prepared by evaporation inan inert gas at a pressure of 10-'-10 ' Torr and the mass numbers of theseclusters were nveasured by a mass analyzer. The following are the nt.ain results.i) In good vacuum lithiunt was detected as single atoms. ii) When an inert gas waspresent, Li., Li., Li. and Li. were always detected; however, Li. and Li, werenever detected. Li, and Li. were detected in smaller amounts than those ofneiglabotmring clusters. iii) In the range Li.. to ti., all possible clusters weredetected and Li.. was most abundant anvong them.
