The core structure of an a/2[ll0](110) edge dislocation in sodium chrolidecrystal was studied by computer simulation under a cyclic botmdary condition. It isfound that each dislocation is dissociated into two partials with Burgers vectorsn/2[l0O] and o/2[0I0], forming a crack on the expanded side of the dislocationand that tlie average interatomic distance in the crystal increases by 5.5 per cent, when the crystal contains dislocations with a density of one dislocation per 30atomic rows parallel to [0014. Using this value, we can explain the large expansionon melting of the salt on the basis of the dislocation theory of liquid. The energyof an edge dislocation per an interatomic distance is 1.19 eV for the above-men-tioned dislocation density, which agrees with the observed value of the heat offusion.
