Anomalous population increase of the first excited state of Dy" in Dy3A1.O..in a pulsed magnetic field of a few ms duration is observecl optically at 4.2 K.From experimertts of the field and time dependences of the pc>pulation increase, itis concluded that this phenomenon is due to the adiabatic magnetization of aneffective-spin system with a large initial splitting. In deriving this conclusion,it is assumed that, during the pulsed field being applied, the spin system is ther-madly isolated from the heat reservoir but the spin system is in thermal equilibriumbecause of a fast effective spin-spin relaxation time. The anomalous populationincrease is also observed in DyAI0., Er.Ga.0.., Ho.Al,0.., HoAl0., but notin TmAl0..
