The discrete variational (DV)-Xα method is applied to the calculation of energies, ΔE_U and ΔE_R, of the excitations from the t_<2g>^3 ^4A_<2g> ground state to the t_<2g>^2 eg ^4T_<2g> and t_<2g>^3 ^2E_g excited states, respectively, of an octahedral [CrO_6]^<9-> cluster under high pressure. The dependence of these energies upon the Cr-O distance, R, is found to be δ(lnΔE_U)/δ(lnR)=-4.5, and δ(lnΔE_R)/δ(lnR)=0.375. The latter dependence gives a good agreement with an empirical relation between the pressure and the spectral shift of the R emission line of ruby; this relation is used for the pressure calibration.
