Theory of the Optical Second-Order Nonlinear Polarizability of Wurztite-Type Crystals

In this paper we describe the theory of nonlinear polarizability of wurtzite-typecrystals using sp' hybridized wave function model. Negative sign of 7.':). of Bed, Zn0and SiC follows naturally from the model with Slater-type wave function and Pauling'sionicity without any further empirical assumptions. It is pointed out that the overlap ofthe wave functions of anion and cation leads to a contribution to '7',f/, as large as otherterms. The abnormal ratio 7,':)./z':'. in distorted wurztite-type crystals (Bed, Zn0, SiCand CdS) is also discussed. Its main cause is the bond-ionicity anisotropy Af=f. -f.in crystals. Af is proportional to the spontaneous lattice distortion A(c/a), where c anda are the lattice constants. Af/A(c/a) is found to be about 3.
