A systematic method for isolating certain nonlinear partial difference equations thatexhibit solitons is proposed. A nonlinear partial difference equation which approx-imates the Korteweg-de Vries equation in the weakly nonlinear and continuum limit, isobtained. N-soliton solutions, the Bficklund transformation and the inverse scatteringtransform for this equation are presented.
