The validity and limitations of the method suggested by Gopala Krishna for determining the dielectric relaxation time of a polar solute in a nonpolar solvent is discussed. It has been observed that it can be applied only to spherical molecules having single relaxation time and with the small value of the optical dielectric constant slope. An improved equation gives the value of the relaxation time in agreement to those obtained by using conventional Cole-Cole plot. The latter method, also applicable only to spherical molecules, uses the measurements of dielectric constant and dielectric loss at a single microwave frequency in conjugation with the optical dielectric constant value of different dilute solutions.
