X-Ray Crystal Structure Analysis of Ca_2Pb (CH_3CH_2CO_2)_6 in the Paraelectric and the Ferroelectric Phases

Absolute crystal structures of Ca.Pb(CH,CH,CO.). (DLP) were determined by X-ray diffraction from monodomain crystals at 70'C above T. and at 45'C and -80'Cbelow T.. The space groups of dextrorotatory crystal are P4.2.2 and P4. above andbelow T., respectively. Above T., /7-carbon atoms in three ol' the independent fourpropionate tons and cx-carbon atom of one propion?ate ion arc in the disordered statehaving two equilibrium positions with equal occupancy. At 45"C, these carbon atomsare in the partially disordered states. At - 80'C, only one /7-carbon remains in the partially disordered state, whereas all of the other Ql- and /7-carbons are in the orderedstate. The spontaneous polarization is well explained by displacements of Pb, Ca and0 atoms along the c-axis.[dicalcium lead propionate, crystal structure, ferroelectrici[y, successive phase ll transitionsl
