The optical absorption, emission, and excitation spectra for the Eu" ton inthe alkali halides have been investigated at room temperature. It was found thatthe maunitude of the IODQ srlittinx of the 4f'5d confiuuration into its t,. and e.comr>onents caused b>' the cubic crvstalline field follows the srcectrochemicalseries in which the ordering of the halides appears to be determined by the magni-tude of the contact interactions. The emission srectrum of the ctuenched samplesconsists in all cases of only one band whose peak position moves to shorterwavelengths as the lattice parameter increases within a given series. The excitationspectrum correlates quite well with the optical absorption and shows that the e.level decays to the t., from which the fluorescence originates.
