The Peierls stress of a screw dislocation in a diamond lattice is studied. The potential between neighbouring atomic rows is assumed to be made of three parabolas which are smoothly connected with one another. The peierls stress and energy obtained by exact calculation are extremely sensitive to the anharmonic part of the potential. It is shown that the dislocation is able to take the asymmetric configuration under no external force in spite of the symmetric inter-atom-row potential.
