A new kind of surface phonon mode is proposed to occur for a semi-infinite (SI) one-dimensional (1d) lattice with hard quartic anharmonicity. This is a nonlinear localized mode with p-like symmetry in the strong localization limit associated with the end of the SI 1d nonlinear lattice. The characteristic properties of these modes in contrast to conventional surface modes and bulk anharmonic localized modes are that its central position is located at a point 3/2-lattice-constant away from the end atom, and that only a few atoms undergo large excursion in comparison with the rest of the atoms.
