The antiferromagnetic s=1/2 Heisenberg spin model in one dimension is analyzed by a variational Hamiltonian in terms of Jordan-Wigner fermions. Some results are compared with those of modified bosonic spin-wave theory. The fermionic quasi-particles (spinons) reproduce the "spin-wave" excitations of des Cloizeaux and Pearson with good accuracy.
