Collisional Excitation Transfer between Hydrogen Atoms. I. H(2p) + H(1s) → H(1s) + H(2P)

The exact resonant process H^*(2p) + H(1s) → H(1s) + H^*(2P), of which the interaction is a typical long range one, has been investigated by the method of perturbed stationary state. The energy curves of interaction of normal and excited hydrogen atoms necessary for the determination of the cross section are calculated by the Heitler-London procedure. The computations of the cross section are carried out at energies of relative motion 0,1, 1.0, 3.0, 5.0 and 10.0eV. The results agree well with the corresponding calculations by the impact parameter method. At 0.1eV the calculated cross section is 821 πα_0^2.
