Glide Band Structures in Iron Single Crystals

An etching reagent for the observation of dislocations on the (100) surface of iron was developed. The composition is 20g FeC_2・6H_2O, 40ml ethyl alcohol, 40ml water and a few mg CuCl_2・2H_2O. Glide bands were observed on iron single crystals extended under various constant loads at O℃ and -78℃. Observed glide band patterns on the crystals extended in the [011] direction changed sensitively by applied stress. The glide bands on the crystals extended at low stress were vague, and they become sharper at higher stress. The pit density in glide bands was proportional to applied stress. It is inferred from the observations of glide bands that there appear large stress concentrations at the tips of : growing glide bands in iron single crystals.
