There is relatively intense interest in studying the magnetic behaviors of the solid solutions of a noble metal containing 3d transition elements in dilute concentration because it gives useful informations on the electronic state and the indirect magnetic interaction of 3d transition elements. Wachtel and Vetter made magnetic sutdies on Au-Cr alloys containing 7.5 to 29.2 at. % Cr above liquid air temperature and found antiferromagnetism in higher Cr concentration alloys. This report deals with more dilute region of Au-Cr alloys. Magnetic susceptibility measurements were made on Au alloys containing 0.5, 1, 2,4 and 8 at. % Cr in the temperature range from 4.2 to 280°K. The specimens were prepared from Au of 99,999% purity and Cr of 99.99% purity. The metals were combined at first in an alloy containing 8 at. % Cr. The specimen of desired dilute composition was obtained from appropriate quantity of this alloy and the pure gold. In each case, the constituents were melted together in an induction furnace in vacuum. The resulting ingots were vacuum sealed in silica tubes and annealed at 900℃ for two days. To insure against the possible precipitation of Cr, they were quenched and stored in iquid nitrogen. The magnetic susceptibility was measured by a magnetic torsion balance in a magnetic field of 8300 Oe.
