In the calculation of the binding energies of σ bonds, it is necessary to take full account of the overlap integrals between bonded orbitals, but it is sufficient to take up to the second order terms for the overlap integrals between non-bonded orbital into account, because the magnitude of the latter overlap integrals is much smaller than that of the former integrals. The binding energy of a σ bond in the above approximation is discussed.
