In his main book Systematic Theology (Volume III), Paul Tillich writes of "justification by faith" in the discussion of "justification by grace through faith": "It should be regarded as the Protestant principle that, in relation to God, God alone can act and that no human claim, especially no religious claim, no intellectual or maral or devotional 'work', can reunite us with him." Tillich developed his systematic theology based on this Protestant principle. Therefore we can see it in all areas of his theology, not only in the areas of his dogma but also in his theology of culture. However, we need to deal with it in its entirety, because it is sometimes expressed directly and sometimes indirectly. Then it is very useful for us to discuss it in the view of "grace" which is, I think, the essence of the doctricne of justification by faith. According to Tillich, grace has a Gestalt which criticizes and forms all beings at the same time, so it precedes them. Tillich calls it the "Gestalt of grace". It is transcendent and at the same time realistic in any being which reveals the Gestalt of grace. Therefore, the doctrine of grace is the principle of Tillich's theology which is rooted in the relationship between God and human beings.
