Paul Tillich (1886-1965) described the basic purpose and structure of his theology in the preface to his Systematic Theology, vol.1 (1951). According to this preface, his theology is an "apologetic theology." He sometimes uses a substitute for the traditional term "apologetic", calling his theology an "answering" theology. By this he means a theology that seeks to respond to problems in the contemporary situation by means of Christian conceptions. This idea of "apology" constitutes the basis for his Systematic Theology. But even though his systematic work was not completed until his later years, the idea of apology on which it rests was already apparent in embryonic form in his younger years. The purpose of this paper, therefore, is to compare the ideas of apology in his later and younger years and to consider the basic character of his theology.
