A theory of plasmon-optical phonon coupling in polar materials is formulated from the viewpoint of linear response theory in statistical mechanics. The dispersion equations of the coupled waves are given for both longitudinal and transverse modes. The coupling of plasmons with longitudinal optical phonons in a spherical electron-hole droplet is also discussed by the linearized hydrodynamic approximation and the eigenfrequencies are derived.
