In 1985, a study of selected ASHP members' concepts of institutional pharmacy in the year 2000 was published. This study used the same methodology with futures statements based on the current issues facing the profession. The futures statements concerning pharmacy education and practice were developed using a modified Delphi method. The questionnaire included nine demographic questions and 77 futures statements. The futures questionnaire was mailed in October of 1990 to 3,000 randomly selected members of the American Society of Hospital Pharmacists, in January of 1991 to 2,600 members of the Pharmaceutical Society of New Zealand, and in November of 1990 to 980 members of the Japanese Society of Hospital Pharmacists. There were 493 valid questionnaires returned in New Zealand (18.97%), 703 valid questionnaires returned in Japan (71.73%), and 887 valid questionnaires returned in the United States (29.57%). The results of the Japanese study will be presented including their concepts of pharmacy in the year 2010. The number of factors identified as statistically significant were similar in all three countries. The six factors identified in Japan were: 1-Pharmacy Relationships with other Professions and Pharmacy Practice Acts; 2-Pharmacy Education Requirements; 3-Pharmacist's Compensation/Benefits; 4-Support Personnel; 5-Effects of Biotechnology; 6-Women's Issues. A discussion of the results is presented. A comparison of New Zealand, Japanese, and U.S. pharmacists concepts of pharmacy in the year 2010 will be presented in a subsequent paper.
