Emission of nitrous oxide (N_2O) from unsterilized and NH_4^+ treated Andosol was slightly increased by the addition of NO_2^-. This effect decreased with decrease in the amounts of NO_2^- added. Emission of N_2O from unsterilized or sterilized soil treated with NH_2OH was slightly increased by the addition of NO_2^-. Nitrous oxide can be produced through the reaction of hydroxylamine with nitrite in soil, though this reaction does not appear to be the main mechanism for the production of N_2O in soil.
