Four soil samples were incubated under aerobic conditions after treatment with (NH_4)_2SO_4, NaH_2PO_4 and/or CaCO_3 and evolved N_2O was measured by a gas chromatographic technique. Emission of N_2O from NH_4-amended soils increased with the addition of CaCO_3 and/or phosphate. The addition of CaCO_3 and phosphate enhanced the growth of ammonium oxidizing population and the accumulation of nitrite. The increased emission of N_2O from soils may be due to the effects of CaCO_3 and phosphate on both mechanism per se and nitrifying population.
