EFFECTS OF THE INTERCEPTION OF NEAR ULTRAVIOLET RADIATION ON NITRIFIER ACTIVITY AND NITRIFICATION PROCESS IN A FERTILIZED ANDOSOL UNDER FIELD CONDITIONS

Surface of a fertilized Andosol was covered with a near ultraviolet-absorbing polyvinyl chloride film or a standard polyvinyl chloride film for agricultural use under field conditions for 63 days, and the most probable numbers (MPN) of ammonium oxidizers and nitrite oxidizers and inorganic form of nitrogen in the soil were determined every week. The results indicated that the numbers of ammonium oxidizers and nitrite oxidizers were increased. NO_2^- accumulation was prevented and NO_3^- formation was accelerated by the interception of near ultraviolet radiation at least in the soil surface (0-0.5 cm depth).
