PBa19 Mesomorphic Properties and Hydrogen Bonding Formation of Triphenylene Discotic Liquid Crystals Possessing a Carboxylic Acid at the Terminal End of Alkyl Chain

A novel triphenylene mesogen with two terminal carboxylic acids was synthesized. This asymmetrically substituted derivative gives a monotropic mesophase on cooling. Temperature dependence of infrared spectra for this compound shows that hydrogen bond interaction among the carboxylic acids could contribute to decrease of the mesophase thermal stability.
