The transients of the transmittance and the voltage holding ratio(VHR) of a liquid crystal cell that involves impurity ions driven by bipolar pulse voltage were measured and their relation to the amplitude of residual DC voltage was evaluated. After the application of DC voltage to induce the residual DC voltage, the pulse voltage was applied with amplitude of 2.3 V corresponding to the condition of half-tone image driving. The resultant transmittance of the cell was below the unstressed level and showed various degrees of relaxation corresponding to the amplitude of the residual DC voltage. The VHR increased with increasing DC application time and depended on the polarity of the pulse voltage.
