Nowaday, many Japanese think of leisure merely as free time after work, but it has an important meaning for our culture. According to Aristotle, to whom we owe many of our ideas about leisure, freetime can be devided into three categories, anapausis (rest, recreation), paidia (amusement, entertainment), and schole (self-development, self-realization). Each historical stage of social development has its own concept of leisure. The first stage is pre-industrial society. It was a society that valued the ethics of hard work. Under these conditions, anapausis was the main from of leisure. The second stage, industrial society, saw the development of automation and of the systems of mass production, masssales and mass consumption. The good life meant owing as many things as possible. With this consciousness, paidia became a big business. The third stage is post-industrial society, which R.M.Hutchings called the "Learning Society" in 1968. People started looking for a new life style from having value to being value. Under the "Lerning Society", we hope schole will be the main from of leisure.
