Fully relativistic quantum electrodynamical calculations are carried out for the effective Compton cross sections in a hot plasma. Both the differential and total cross sections are studied. When the electronic velocity distribution is isotropic, these cross sections can be expressed in terms of one-dimensional integrals of several relatively simple functions. For each cross section, the classical Thomson limit is indicated and the quantum effects, which become more important at higher temperatures for a given incident frequency, are discussed.
