The Periodic s-d Model in the Strong Coupling Limit : Condensed Matter and Statistical Physics

The periodic s-d model with a half filled band is studied by means of an approximation valid in the strong coupling limit. Restricting the Hilbert space to the singlet and the two doublet states at each lattice site and regarding the singlet state as vacuum, we set up the effective hamiltonian. The ground state is found to be an insulator with the energy gap in the excitation spectrum. The effect of finite temperature is also discussed.
