Two-nucleon correlation function for reaction of high-energy heavy ion is investigated based upon the statistical model (nuclear fireball model). The correlation results from the strong interaction among nucleons in the fireball. By using the S-matrix formulation of the grand partition function, the correlation function is expressed in terms of the scattering phase shift of nucleons. We obtain the expression for the function at a few hundred MeV/A of energies, where contribution of pion production could be neglected. Some results for the reaction Fe+Cu at 400 MeV/A are shown and discussed. The effect of pion production at higher energy is briefiy discussed, by comparing our calculated results with experimental data on the reaction Ar+KCI at 1.8 GeV/A. It is shown that a reasonable value of parameter ρ_c (density of the thermal system) should have a constraint ρ_c≃0.5ρ_o,ρ_o being the normal density of nuclear matter.
