Unified theories applied to cosmology suffer generically from a problem of predicting time-dependent gauge coupling constants, which might be in conflict with observed no time-variability. A remedy is proposed by taking advantage of a rather unexpected but highly nontrivial behavior of the scalar field that relaxes the cosmological constant. The importance of probing the possible time variation of the fine-structure constant with improved accuracy is emphasized.
