An exclusion principle on the equilibria for the Lotka-Volterra system is presented. For example, if the equilibrium of species 1 and 2 is stable, then the equilibrium of species 1,2, and 3 is unstable even if it exists. This holds whether the interspecific interaction is competitive or not.
