Dumb-Bell-Shape Equilibria and Mass-Shedding Pear-Shape of Selfgravitating Incompressible Fluid

Two sequences of equilibria of uniformly rotating selfgravitating incompressible fluid have been computed which branch off the Jacobi sequence and which have finite deformations from the Jacobi ellipsoids. One is a sequence with "pear-shaped" figures. Contrary to earlier widespread expectations, it has been found that this sequence does not lead to fission but terminates at the critical point where the mass is shed from the equator. the other is a sequence with dumb-bell-shaped figures which extend to Darwin's two ellipsoid sequence. Therefore, the rotating fluid is led to the fission through the dumb-bell-shaped sequence rather than the pear-shaped sequence as far as the equilibrium sequence is concerned.
