Stellar structure in very advanced phases of evolution is discussed, taking into account the hydrogen-rich envelope. The star is divided into the envelope and the core. It is shown that the envelope with an extended surface-convection zone can be replaced, to a good approxi-mation, by suitable boundary conditions at the outer edge of the core. Computing evolution of the core with these boundary conditions, we can discuss mixing between the stellar core and envelope through a deepening surface convection zone; the condition for the mixing is formulated as an entropy condition at the edge of the core. Simplified model of the core is studied to understand how the mixing proceeds in the very advanced phases of evolution. Detailed numerical computation has been made for the stars of masses about 30 and 12 Mxodoi through oxygen-burning phase, and for the star of mass about 6Mxodoi through the phase of carbon-shell burning. In the present paper, however, we give physical data used in this series of studies, and only a brief summary of numerical results. The datailed results will be given in papers II and III of this series.
