Shadow poles associated with a resonance are discussed from a general standpoint based on unitarity, Hermitian analyticity and pole residue factorization of the multichannel S-matrix. It is shown that the results are basically parallel to the Breit-Wigner model: A resonance pole induces shadow poles lying near the resonance energy on vairous Riemann sheets, and the residues or channel coupling strengths control the pole positions. They have definite physical effects around the resonance through unitarity and we have detected the one on the first unphysical sheet for πN resonance. A resonance parametrization taking account of the shadow structure is obtained as an application.
