Basic ideas in the investigation of excited states using secondary reactions with intermediate unstable nuclear beams were presented. Kinematic condition and selectivity of reactions and decays enable us to identify excited states. In-beam spectroscopy with high-resolution γ-ray measurement as well as invariant mass methods will be powerful tools for investigating nuclear structures in a wide range of the nuclear chart.
