In the south-eastern part of Hyogo-Ken, two small rivers, Arino and Arima river are flowing into Muko river at Dozyo-Cho. The distance between Arino and Arima-Cho is about 5km. Arima is a gorgeous spa famed from the time of yore. Along the Arino river runs the Kobe Tramway (Kobe-Sanda) and at a tram-stop named Gosha, there is also a spa which is not so prospering. Up in the Arino river, just only five hundred meters apart from Gosha, a little bit of mineral water is now trickling out of several spots, some from fissures of rocky bank and some from sandy bank. The flowing water containing those mineral constituents in a certain dilute density is for a long time unconsciously used for irrigating about 100ha. farmland mostly paddy field and the catch crops, wheat, strawberry, and cabbage etc. are under cultivation without any mineral water trouble in the past. Such is a brief description of agricultural status of the place to be discussed. The present authors are requested by the "Investigation Commitee of Spa Injury of Arino-Cho", which have got some promising authorized data by trial borings of those little mineral springs, to predict the influence which may be followed by the future development of Arino spa, as that of adjacent Arima, on field crops in case of irrigating the water of bulky and constant mixing of mineral contents. (A topographical sketch of Arino and Arima river with each spring is given in page 21,and also two tables of analysis of spring water of Arino and Arima are shown in page 22.) After two days' pedestrian comparative survey of Arino farmland and Arima farm section into which the strongly mineralized water has been continuously irrigated for more than 300 years, have come to perceive the severe effects of minerals upon the field crops of Arima, and at the same time we could imagine vividly the distressed remorses of Arino farmers together with the happy citizens who care nothing about farms making merries in the newly built Arino spa when the present harmless little springs are dug out to the large ones just like Arima spa. For brevity, the following table of comparative quantitative description of Arino and Arima river will make clear the difference of toxicity as irrigation water. [table] Obviously the toxic effects upon field crops in Arima farmland appeared more severe as we reached nearer to the Arima spa. Severity of minerals upon the field crops in Arima farmland may be lined up briefly as follows; 1) Rice : a few tillering, straws and grains brittle, quality inferior, yield 70-80%. 2) Wheat and Barely : normal growth in the past. But by the recent rapid expansion of spring gush, the case has become worse. 3) Strawberry : no cultivation at all, leaves turn to red, pulp never becomes mellow and unfit for jam making. 4) Azuki bean (Phaseolus radiatus L. var. aurea PRAIN.) : leaves turn to red, poorest harvest, lastly the plant dies out. 5) Soy bean (Glycine max MER.) : from the spring to 2km. lower reaches of Arima river, not cultivated. But thenceforth grows normally. 6) Broad bean (Vicia Faba L.) : grows very well. 7) Tomato : grows normally. 8) Cabbage : grows normally. P.S. By this preliminary report of ours, the "Investigation Commitee of Spa Injury of Arino-Cho" have decided to postpone further borings of Arino spring.
