• ohn Witherspoon (1723-94) is known as the lone clerical signer of the Declaration of Independence today. Before emigrating to America in 1768 to become president of the College of New Jersey (now Princeton), he served Scottish parish and made a name for himself within the Popular party. He published satires on the affectations of manner, the laxness of doctrine and the preference to morals among the Moderate party. In America he would become for establishing the same concerns with rhetoric, literature and moral philosophy as the Moderates within the American College. Largely on the analysis of his Lectures on Moral Philosophy, this paper tries to clarify his discussions on the relation between piety and reason, the theory of resistance, and the American liberty.
