Qualitative and Quantitative Assessment of Bone Around HA-Coated Titanium Implants : Microradiographic, Microscopic and Histomorphometric Analyses

Hydroxyapatite-coated titanium implants "by high velocity flame spraying" (Asahi Optical Co., Ltd., Japan) were inserted into fresh extraction sites and edentulous ridges in dogs. At both implanted sites, the bone data around the implants were compared and studied by several analytical techniques. Light and scanning electron microscopic findings, especially in the three months postimplantation samples, confirmed that there was an intimate bonding at the interface in both sites. Moreover, quantitative analysis of microradiographs was performed to measure the bone radiodensity and estimate the degree of mineralization. Histomorphometric and microradiographic analyses revealed that there was an increase in bone implant contact length (BIC) and bone radiodensity by time at both sites. The term crystallo-integration may be more applicable than osseo-integration to define the interaction between the bone and HA at the interface.
