In China, before you register a marrige, you are obliged to have a physical examination and submit the certificate to the town office. If you are found to have the diseases or physiological defects which are considered not to be suitable to marry, you will be told to give up the marriage or postpone it until the disease is cured. Likewise, many canditates for college will not be able to get the admission or have to give up the majors they want to apply, only because they can not get through the entrance physical examination. And the troule found can simply be a high blood pressure or asthma you sufferd when you were a kid. Before 1990's, almost nobody questioned the authority of these physical examinations. But nowadays these compulsory examinations are being questioned and critisized. And as a result, the system are being corrected or improved by the government. This paper takes up the the change of people's attitude toward physical examinations as a change of relation between individuals and state, accompanied by the introduction of market economy and the attendant pluralization.
