The behavioristic reaction of the second stage larvae of Meloidogyne incognita acrita to the excised roots of six species of plants which were different in the degree of susceptibility to the nematode was observed by modified Bird's method using 1 per cent agar medium. It was found that a many of nematode larvae accumulated to the roots of tomato, tobacco and sweet-potato which were suitable hosts of the nematode. Using the following formula, the mechanism of accumulation of the nematode around the excised root of tomato seedling was considered ; [numerical formula] Where, N indicated the initial nematode number exclusive of the innermost circle, E(t) the cumulative number in the innermost circle at time t, q the probability of remaining nematode number exclusive of the innermost circle. The log q from the experimental values was less than its calculated values with the hypothesis that the larvae moved around at random and never went out of the innermost circle, and there was significant difference between two values, so, it was assumed that the nematode larvae might be attracted to the root. The result from observation on the orientation of the nematode to the root showed that in the second inner circle a significantly large number of nematode oriented positively to the root, however, in the third and outermost circle they moved at random. Many larvae were attracted near by the growth point of root but a few were also attracted to the other regions of root. It was suggested that some chemical substances excreted from roots might be responsible, in part, for the attractiveness of roots to the nematode larvae, because tomato root diffusate obtained by culturing for three days in sands was attractive.
