Experiments of the effets of parental attack density on the brood production of the minute pine bark beetle, Taenioglyptes fulvus (NIIJIMA), in logs (12 cm long, 20 cm in circumference) of the Japanese red-pine, Pinus densiflora SIEB, et ZUCC., were carried out under controlled conditions at 25±1℃.As the density of entrance holes per unit area of bark increased the parent beetles abandoned their galleries more rapidly, constructed shorter egg galleries and laid fewer eggs. The crowing effects among larvae were reflected in the length and area of the larval mines. The maximum numner of progeny beetles per egg gallery was produced at a density of 500 entrance holes per square meter of bark. The emergence curves of beetles varied between the densities. The data of 50% beetle emergence was earlier at the optimum density (500-1,000 entrance holes per square meter) than the others. The size of progeny beetles decreased with an increase of density, but was not related to galklery construction and egg deposition.
