Histological changes in the midgut cells of Bombyx larvae after the administration of cadmium chloride were observed by light and electron microscopy. Remarkable structural changes were seen in the midgut cells 6 to 9 hours after administration. Twelve hours after treatment, degenerating goblet cells were detected, and the columnar cells also degenerated completely by 24 hours. Under the electron microscope, condensed, large and round chromatin bodies were characteristically observed in the nuclei of both columnar and goblet cells. Microvilli on the apical surface of the columnar cells disappear, and the basement membrane on the basal region is also lost. Mitochondria degenerate, and lysosomes and residual vacuoles increase. The granular endoplasmic reticulum becomes globular in form. In the goblet cells, plasma membranes of the mitochondria-filled cytoplasmic projection make the swirled membrane bodies, and discharge into the goblet cavity.
