Haematobia irritans (L.) and Stomoxys calcitrans (L.) have trypsin-like enzymes (TLE)in the midgut to break down ingested blood proteins. Using DEAE-cellulose chromatography, three forms of TLE were detected in the former and two in the latter. A first eluted form of the latter was active in a more alkaline range than the first of the former. Activities of all TLE forms except the third form of H. irritans reached a maximum at 40 to 45℃. The third form of H. irritans reached a maximum at a slightly higher temperature. K_m value of the first form in both flies was similar, but that of the second form in S. calcitrans was lower than that in H. irritans. T he K_m value of the third form, unique to H. irritans, was also low.
