The topical and injection toxicities of some synthetic pyrethroids to the German cockroach, Blattella germanica L., were investigated as part of a study of the selective toxicity of different insecticides in a number of insects. Results of the study indicated that on a per gram body weight basis, the synthetic pyrethroids were not as toxic to the cockroach as they were to the armyworm in topical application treatments. With the exception of fenpropathrin, fenitrothion (as OP insecticide) was more toxic than all the synthetic pyrethroids tested at 24 hr, and was of about equal toxicity with all the pyrethroids at 48 and 72 hr after treatment. Fenvalerate, however, was the most toxic at 72 and 96 hr when LD_50 values were compared. All the synthetic pyrethroids were more toxic by injection than by topical application. Cyanide (CN) containing compounds were also relatively more toxic than their non-CN containing analogues. The cuticle of the cockroach provides greater resistance to the penetration of synthetic pyrethroids than the cuticles of the armyworm, cutworm or housefly. Reduced cuticle penetration probably contributes to the lower toxicities of the synthetic pyrethroids in topical application to the German cockroach.
