There are a constant speed period and a compact settling period in the settling of fine particles having a comparatively narrow size range. In this paper relations between ζ potential and the settling velocity of fine quartz particles in aqueous solutions are discussed. The effect of electrostatic repulsion and attraction, hitherto discussed by many authors in connection with the problem of slime settling may be of considerable significance only when the settling particles are finer than about 1μ. Quartz particles have the value of sphericity of their own, but this sphericity may be changed by the kind or quantity of ions adsorbed by the quartz, because the nature of wettability of quartz particles may be changed by the adosorption of ions from aqueous solution. In other words, quartz particles are supposed to have an apparent sphericity in aqueous solution. From these viewpoints, the author derived the relation between settling velocity and ζ potential of quartz particles. It is as follows : [numerical formula]
